Apple hires graphics chip expert

Apple has hired graphics hardware expert Bob Drebin, the former chief technology officer at AMD.
Drebin joined AMD when the PC chip maker acquired ATI, where, according to his profile, he “led the architecture and design of many of ATI award-winning graphics processors”, many of which have been deployed in Macs.
He will bring expertise in the key area of multicore graphics processors, whose power Apple is looking to exploit with the forthcoming Snow Leopard version of OS X.
Apple has gradually adding chip design expertise over the past year, since surprised many with the purchase of PA Semiconductor, a designer of low power chips. It then appointed a member of IBM’s server division as the new head of Devices Hardware Engineering, responsible for the iPod and iPhone.
