Our Rating
Matrox cards are famed for their stonking performance in 2D applications and vibrant DVD playback.
Unfortunately, it's difficult to be so glowing about the Millennium G550's 3D capabilities. Scoring a paltry 2879 in 3DMark 2000 - and a frankly embarrassing 1126 in 3DMark 2001 - didn't inspire confidence. The Matrox juddered its way through Quake 3 at an average of 12.7fps at a resolution of 1,024x768. At 1,600x1,200, the Matrox crawled to the finish at just 2.7fps.
On the plus side, the Matrox is the only card here to offer a flexible dual-display for both standard monitors and DVI-equipped flat panels. The S-Video out allows you to play DVDs on a big-screen telly, while doing something entirely different on the other two monitors.
However, when it comes to 3D, the Matrox just can't compete, and at £102 looks a little too pricey for the performance on offer.
