Pioneer Superior Club Sound headphone range revealed

Pioneer has revealed a new range of headphones catered for dance music fans, which are designed to replicate the club experience when out on the move. The Superior Club Sound range is comprised of two over-ear and two in-ear models, which have a style-conscious design that takes more than a few cues from Dr Dre’s Beats line-up.

The flagship over-ear SE-MX9 uses 50mm drivers deliver what Pioneer calls “tantalising trebles and powerful bass”. The fully closed drivers are able to deliver a claimed frequency range of 6-40,000Hz at an impedance 32ohms and with a 106dB sensitivity. With an inline remote control and integrated microphone, they are clearly designed with smartphone and tablet owners in mind, but include a spare 2m audio cable for anyone listening at home.

With ear plates built from aluminium and finished in a choice of Bright Silver, Bright Copper and Indigo Black colours, each pair of SE-MX9s will come with a carry case, full-size 6.3mm audio jack adaptor and an in-flight adaptor.

The more mid-range SE-MX7, meanwhile, uses smaller 40mm drivers to deliver a 6-25,000Hz frequency range, with a 102dB sensitivity and 16ohm impedance. Each earcup contains two drivers, to balance treble and mid-range with bass. They are finished in a combination of rubber and leather, again include an inline remote with integrated microphone, and come in four colour choices: black, white, orange and blue.

The SE-MX7 could be the pick of the bunch for anyone that likes to customise their listening experience, as it includes manual bass level control to crank up the low-end for ear-splitting basslines, or dial it down for more delicate tracks.

The in-ear SE-CX9 and SE-CX8 both have ‘bass exciters’ built into the back of each ear bud to vibrate in time with your music, making sure you physically feel the bass in your tracks. We will reserve judgement until we’ve tried them out, but haven’t been impressed by similar vibration systems in the past.

Otherwise, the SE-CX9 uses balanced armature drivers while the SE-CX8 makes do with dynamic drivers. Both include an in-line remote and microphone, along with detachable cables, three sizes of ear tips and a carry case.

“Given our reputation in the DJ booth, we are well-placed to create a range of headphones that are for clubbers as well as the DJs themselves,: Pioneer product manager Geoff Loveday said of the range. “We have taken care to design a range of premium headphones that allows users to re-live their favourite clubbing memories though the music they listen to in their own time.”

All four new models will be available to buy in the UK from April onwards. The SE-MX9 abd SE-CX9 should cost £250, while the SE-MX7 and SE-CX9 will retail for around £170. We’ll be taking a listen to each of the new models later today, so be sure to check back tomorrow to find out how they sound.
