Our Rating
The retro styling of Maxell's HP-550F folding headphones makes them look more expensive than their price.
They fold down to a compact size. Their looks, with metallic gold colouring and metal frame size adjusters, are a matter of personal taste. A volume control is mounted halfway along the headphone cable.
Audio quality is respectable. Treble and mid-range tones are well defined, resulting in crisp reproduction of guitars and vocals in rock and pop songs, and clear orchestral music. The bass is underpowered, which didn't have a noticeable effect on heavy bass beats, but stole warmth from low vocals and orchestral tones. Bass-boosted EQ settings improved this.
The headphones were light and comfortable to wear, but some may find that they put too much pressure on the tops of the ears. Maxell's HP-550F headphones sound surprisingly good for the price, but the lack of bass could be a problem for some.
