Our Rating
Denon's AH-C551 earphones include an acoustic optimiser, designed to improve audio quality by ensuring that the air is at the same pressure both behind and in front of the vibrating diaphragm that creates the sound.
They're clear, with a powerful bass. If anything, the driving bass is too strong, drowning out the weaker mid-range tones and high notes. We got more balanced and well-defined sound when we reduced the bass volume on our audio source.
The earphones have rubber sleeves, which fit into your ear canal and block out a lot of background noise. They don't fit as securely as those of many other ear-canal phones, as the weight of the metal housings made them shift in our ears. The lead attached to them is only long enough to reach a shirt pocket, but they come with an extension lead as well as spare rubber sleeves and a case.
Despite the over-emphatic bass and high price, this is an excellent set of earphones. Shure's SE120 set of earphones is worth the extra £10, however.
