Our Rating
Maxtor may now be owned by Seagate, but Maxtor-branded internal SATA hard disks continue to be released. The 500GB DiamondMax 22 is one of the cheapest internal 500GB hard disks we've seen at just £52.
The DiamondMax did very well in our large-file transfer test, with an overall speed of just under 80MB/s. It was less impressive when transferring small files, though, writing them at an unremarkable 8.1MB/s and reading them at a sluggish 16.4MB/s.
The price works out at a low 11p per gigabyte but this doesn't make up for the unremarkable small-files performance. Western Digital's 640GB Caviar SE16 is larger, performed consistently well in all our tests, costs even less per gigabyte and is only £10 more. Unless you're on a tight budget, the Caviar is better value.
