Our Rating
Solid-state disks (SSDs) are faster and more rugged than conventional hard disks, and they use less power, making them perfect for laptops. Samsung's 64GB SSD is designed to fit laptops that accept 2½in SATA disks.
We didn't expect Samsung's SSD to live up to its claims, but it was faster than any 5,400rpm and 7,200rpm 2½in laptop hard disk in our file-transfer tests and came close to matching the performance of a desktop 3½in disk. Our test laptop lasted three-and-a-half hours in our light-use battery test when fitted with a 160GB 5,400rpm hard disk. Impressively, it lasted an hour longer with Samsung's SSD fitted.
The problem is that it's very expensive, with an astronomically high cost per gigabyte of £6.28. Future models should be cheaper, but for now it's too expensive to recommend, even considering the great performance and extra battery life.
