Our Rating
Solid-state disks (SSDs) can be fast at copying files, are more rugged than standard hard disks, and can improve a laptop's battery life.
They tend to be expensive, though. OCZ's 60GB Core Series V2 is the cheapest we've seen. It was faster than any 2in SATA hard disk we've seen when reading files, but slower than expected when writing them. Unlike Samsung's SSD (What's New, Shopper 250), the Core didn't improve the battery life of our laptop.
It has a mini USB port in addition to a SATA connector, so it can be used as an external disk, making it easy to recover your files if your laptop is damaged. It was very fast at reading files over USB, but slower than expected when writing them.
We were excited by the Core's comparatively low cost, but it's still expensive at £3.23 per gigabyte. Its limited capacity and inconsistent performance means we can't recommend it unless you'll benefit from the ruggedness of an SSD. The 500GB Scorpio will provide far-better value storage for most laptop users.
