This is the highest-capacity drive in Western Digital's new Caviar Black range, which puts an emphasis on performance.
However, while Western Digital disks have dominated our 'Also Consider...' list in recent months, this model doesn't do enough to carry on the legacy. Its performance is consistent, but against the current competition it was average in each of our four tests.
The Caviar Black 1TB fails not through any fault of its own, but simply because it's eclipsed on all fronts by its competitors. Samsung's 1TB Spinpoint F1 DT is faster and costs less, while Seagate's Barracuda 7200.111 is faster, has 50 per cent more capacity and is cheaper per gigabyte. Meanwhile, its 7.8W power consumption when idle is much higher than the Caviar Green's 2.8W, so it's not suitable for a low-power system either.
