Our Rating
Hard disks with a 1TB capacity are currently available for as little as £80, so £147 for the 1TB version of Hitachi's E7K1000 seems high.
This was the lowest price as we went to press, with some vendors selling the disk for as much as £190.
Admittedly, this is a fast hard disk. The highlight of its benchmark results is 90.1MB/s to read small files, which is the fastest here. Its other results are good but less remarkable, placing it fifth in both large-file tests and sixth for small-file writing. At this high price, we'd really expect this disk to produce excellent benchmark results in all tests.
Samsung's 1TB Spinpoint F1 DT disk achieved better scores for both large and small files. The Hitachi has a longer warranty, at five years to the Samsung's three. However, the Spinpoint costs little more than half that of the Hitachi, and is clearly the better buy.
