Our Rating
£51 for 320GB of storage makes this the best-value 2?in laptop hard disk here in terms of pence per gigabyte.
That's not bad going when you consider that, until a few months ago, 320GB was the biggest capacity available from a 2?in disk. The Spinpoint M6's other specifications are less remarkable, with a 5,400rpm spin speed, 8MB cache and slower SATA 150 interface (all the other disks here use SATA 300). However, SATA 150's 150MB/s limitation isn't a concern in practice, as it's fast enough not to create a bottleneck.
The Spinpoint M6 wrote and read large files at around 58MB/s. That's slower than average for reading but faster than average for writing. The same pattern occurred in our small-file tests. Overall, its performance was a little below average but perfectly acceptable for most tasks. For those who want a cheap upgrade for their laptop, it's an excellent choice and it narrowly misses out on an award.
