The TravelStar 7K320 is one of two 2½in disks in this test with a spin speed of 7,200rpm, which should give a boost to performance compared to the 5,400rpm disks.
This advantage comes at a price, though, both in terms of cash - the 7K320 costs £16 more than Samsung's 320GB disk - and power consumption. Hitachi quotes a 1.7W consumption when idle, which is over twice that of the other 2½in disks and will deplete a laptop's battery more quickly.
Performance in our large-file tests was impressive at 56.8MB/s to write and 71.0MB/s to read. It didn't fare so well in our small-file tests, though, with read and write performance both slightly below the average of the other 2?in disks on test. It was beaten in all the performance tests by Western Digital's Scorpio Black and Scorpio Blue disks.
