Our Rating
Scorpio Black is Western Digital's premium brand of laptop hard disks, and this 320GB model proves the point with a 7,200rpm spin speed and 16MB cache.
It also has a free-fall sensor, which parks the drive's heads within 200ms of being dropped. An alternative model (part code WD3200BEKT) omits this sensor and costs around £60, but we would pay the extra for the promise of increased durability.
Performance was excellent throughout our tests, with a 69.2MB/s average for large files and 58.8MB/s for small files. However, it wasn't consistently faster than the 5,400rpm Scorpio Blue 500GB disk; the Scorpio Black was a little faster to write but slower to read.
The Scorpio Blue's 500GB capacity for £80 gives it a wider appeal, but if 320GB is more than enough, the Scorpio Black's free-fall sensor and lower price make it a good choice.
