OCZ announces massive 1TB SSD

OCZ has announced a gargantuan 1TB solid state disk (SSD), the aptly named Colossus.

We're used to seeing SSDs that have less storage space than mechanical hard disks, but OCZ's Colossus will be available in a 1TB version rivalling all but the biggest desktop disks. Unlike most SSDs which are designed to fit laptops, the Colossus is designed for desktop PCs so it has the same shape and size as a standard 3.5in hard disk.

The Colossus will also be available in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB versions. OCZ has yet to confirm pricing and availability information for the 1TB version, but it's likely to be very expensive. The 512GB model can be ordered now from morecomputers.com for an eye-watering £1,235 inc VAT. Unsurprisingly, given its high price and the reputation of SSDs for increased reliability, OCZ is aiming the Colossus at high-end business users and seriously committed PC gaming enthusiasts.

Although the Colossus is far too expensive for most consumers, we hope competition amongst SSD manufacturers leads to lower prices for such huge SSDs in future.
