Acer Travelmate 2423WXMi review

Verdict:

It may not feature top-of-the range components, but you get a lot for your money. It may not be the fastest laptop in this group test, but the low price makes it very tempting.

Dual-core processors and huge hard disks are all well and good, but many people just don't need them in their PC.

If you want something that lets you surf the internet, write the odd letter, watch DVDs now and again, and doesn't take over one corner of the living room, then the Acer Travelmate could be just the ticket.

To say that it's no powerhouse is a bit of an understatement. The Celeron 1.5GHz processor is far from top of the line, but its perfectly able - or at least it would be if it wasn't crippled by a near-useless 256MB of memory. As a result, the Travelmate dawdled in our benchmarks, but the overall score of 31% makes it sound far worse than it actually is. And besides, another 512MB of memory would put the spring back in this PC's step.

Storage is equally modest and the 40GB hard disk looks decidedly cramped by today's standards. But yet again, unless you're a complete media junkie, it's more than enough space for the modest applications for which the Travelmate is suited. The dual-layer DVD writer is particularly welcome though, and with it, you can back up that hard disk on just a handful of discs.

The Travelmate isn't the smallest laptop on test but it's still a bit of a cutie. It's big enough to avoid a cramped keyboard or tiny screen, but still fits neatly in a bag without making it feel like its stuffed with bricks. The 14.1in screen is a great size and thanks to its native resolution of 1280 x 800 gives a nice roomy Desktop in Windows. So, it may not be fancy, but £329 gets you a lot of laptop.
