Google slate to run Chrome OS
Posted on 19 Aug 2010 at 10:07
Further details of a Google-branded slate device designed to compete directly with the iPad have been leaked, but there's a surprise
coming: the device won't be running Android.
Rumours that the company was working on its own-brand slate stretch back months, with the most recent confirmation that US mobile provider
Verizon claimed to be "working on tablets" with Google.
The most recent rumour regarding the device, however, comes from unnamed sources speaking to technology news site DownloadSquad. During conversations, the sources claimed that the slate project is still going ahead at Google, with the search giant once again partnering with HTC - the company which manufactured the Google Nexus One Android smartphone.
The same sources also dropped the bombshell that, unlike the majority of iPad-style slate devices currently in the works at third-party companies, the device won't be running Google's Android mobile platform. Instead, the slate will use the as-yet unproven Chrome OS, a web-based 'cloud' operating system based around Google's Chrome web browser.
Details as to the specifications of the device aren't yet available, but the source has made the claim that it will launch in the US in time for Black Friday - the 26th of November - at an unknown price. So far, no official announcement has come from Google.
