Dell Latitude range refreshed with Haswell CPUs

Dell has upgraded its Latitude line-up of business laptops with Intel 4th Generation Core "haswell" processors

Dell has refreshed its entire Latitude line-up of business laptops, overhauling each model’s design and adding new 4th Generation Intel Core processors, previously known as Haswell.

The simplified range has been boiled down to three model families: the budget Latitude 3000 series, mid-range 5000 series and high-end 7000 series. All new systems will ship with either Windows 8 or Ubuntu 12.04, come with a range of upgrade options including hybrid hard disks or SSDS, as well as a choice of the latest vPro-enabled 4th generation Core processors.

Splitting the range into different product types should help Dell meet the needs of specific users, meaning large, powerful laptops for users who need a portable computer but aren’t particularly mobile and ultrabooks for travellers.

Pick of the bunch has to be the 7000 series Ultrabooks, which are available in non-touch and Gorilla Glass-protected touchscreen variants. Built from a combination of shock absorbing materials including carbon fibre, the 12 and 14in models should be ideal for workers that are frequently on the move. Both will go on sale on the 12th of September.

The mid-range 5000 series will include 14 and 15in screen sizes, which again will include optional 1080p Gorilla Glass touchscreens. Optional dedicated graphics, four, six or nine cell batteries and a choice of solid state or traditional storage make up the list of possible customisations, and the laptops themselves are thinner than the previous generation Latitude models they replace.

Finally, the entry-level 3000 series lose the option for Full HD displays, and can’t be configured with SSD storage. All three new Latitude series will be available directly from Dell from September onwards.
