Deal alert: The Google Pixelbook is £300 off for Black Friday

The premium laptop deals are coming thick and fast

It’s a very good time to be shopping for premium laptops. Just yesterday, we saw £200 slashed off Microsoft’s brand new Surface Laptop 2, and now Google’s top of the line Chromebook has seen a 30% discount, dropping to £699 at John Lewis, Argos and the BT Shop.

The Pixelbook, released last year with a price of £999, is as good as it gets for ChromeOS. While most Chromebooks are cheap and cheerful devices with low specs ideal for students and light users, Google made the Pixelbook to rival the MacBooks and Surface Laptops of this world. We think, broadly, it succeeded, packing in a seventh-generation Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM and 128GB storage into a sleek, stylish-looking frame.

It’s a great machine, but Chromebooks aren’t for everyone. The support of a mature operating system like MacOS or Windows isn’t there for obvious reasons, though it does have access to the Play Store, meaning that any Android app should play nicely with your new machine.

Otherwise, it’s all good. The screen flips all the way round, meaning the Pixelbook can be used as a tablet, and the £99 Pixelbook Pen can also be added, allowing you to take notes or draw on the large 2,400 x 1,600 display. It also has Google Assistant built right in, so voice control is about as good as it gets.

If you like the look of ChromeOS and want the best possible experience, this is it. As Nathan wrote in his review: “the difference between a bargain-basement Chromebook and this new flagship is night and day.

“The sheer ergonomics of the Pixelbook make it a laptop you’ll want to use. Yes, it’s still true that for some jobs a Chromebook isn’t the right choice and probably never will be. But take a look at your own everyday workflow and you might be surprised by how easily it maps onto the Pixelbook. Factor in all the simplicity and security of Chrome OS and you’ve got a highly persuasive alternative to the traditional ultraportable laptop.”
If that has you swayed, now is definitely the time to buy.
