Carphone Warehouse unveils "free" ultraportable
Posted on 4 Jun 2008 at 13:12
Carphone Warehouse has got in on the ultraportable laptop act with the launch of 10.2in "webbook", the latest addition to its free notebook offerings.
"Free" requires that the prospective owner takes out a contract for Carphone Warehouse's mobile or broadband services, though precise details have yet to be confirmed.
Once they do, they get a notebook that runs either Linux or Windows XP on a 1.6GHz processor and 512MB of RAM, with integrated Wi-Fi, three USB ports, audio in and out and an 84 qwerty keyboard. The 10.2in screen provides a 16:9 widescreen display at 1024x600 pixels and there is VGA video out port for attaching a larger display or projector.
Onboard storage comes as 2GB of nand flash, though a more substantial hard drive is available as an upgrade option. There's also a slot for SD, MSpro and MMC cards.
The Elonex-manufactured portable boasts 2.5 hours battery life from its rechargeable lithum polymer cells, and weights just 1.3kg. It comes with one year's warranty and telephone support.
Carphone Warehouse's UMPC (ultramobile PC) will be available in stores and online from mid-June.
