Acer's Eee PC 900 - the update to the 701 with a larger screen - had only been out for around a month before the 901 was released.
Both products are essentially the same, bar a couple of minor differences. The main one is that the 901 now uses an Intel Atom processor instead of the 900's Intel Celeron processor. The Atom feels a bit quicker and makes the laptop more responsive, but otherwise there's little in it. The 20GB solid-state hard disk and Linux operating system (a 12GB XP version is also active), which we featured in this month's Labs, are identical on both models. The 8.9in widescreen display remains the same.
The price of the Eee PC 900 has dropped, too, and it's now available for £30 less than the 901. The real question, then, is which one's worth buying? The answer depends on what you want to do. The Eee PC 900 comes with a much smaller battery than the 901 and has almost half the battery life at just three hours and 20 minutes. If battery life is important to you, the 901 is well worth the extra £30. If battery life is less of a concern, then look around for a 900 - we bet you'll get an even better deal soon.
