Eee PCs to get cheaper

Asus will phase out the smaller Eee PC models and introduce a cheaper model, according to the company's president.
Asus' new cheaper netbook will initially only be on sale in the US, yet the company's current 7in and 9in models will be gradually phased out and not replaced, Jerry Shen told the Digitimes.
The move will leave larger models as the staple of the line-up, such as the recently released Asus Eee PC 1002HA. However, the company is expected to continue aiming for the budget end of the notebook sector by releasing a cheaper netbook, which will retail for $200 (around £125) in the US.
Although Asus kick-started the netbook phenomenon with its Eee PC range, it looks set to be overtaken in terms of sales by Acer. The company expects to ship six million Aspire One models this year, surpassing Asus' expectations of five million Eee PC sales.
Asus expects to be responsible for selling three out of every ten netbooks that are sold through 2009.
