Our Rating
Save for the exclusion of FireWire, the new MacBook is the closest Apple has come to a direct replacement for the 12in PowerBook G4. It may not be as light as the MacBook Air, but it's a better specified and more versatile Mac that still has a security lock slot, SuperDrive, double the maximum memory capacity and faster processors across the board. The downside is the increased cost.
The mid-range model's price has risen by £120 and falls just short of the psychological four-figure barrier that'll still be off-putting for those paying close attention. However, this model remains the best option of the three due to its graphics processor. It's hard to justify the additional expense of the 2.4GHz model, and the difference is better invested in AppleCare to extend your warranty. Where raw graphical power is of no concern, the white MacBook represents excellent value for email, web browsing and college work.
