Charity laptops dump AMD for VIA
Posted on 21 Apr 2009 at 11:40
The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) programme is dropping AMD processors from its XO-1 netbook. The charity will replace the netbook's AMD Geode LX-700 processor with a low-power VIA C7-M.
OLPC ships the netbook out to schoolchildren in developing countries and will launch a new version that has the same look and feel as the previous model. With the processor coming to the end of its lifecycle and rumours that AMD will stop producing processors for netbooks, OLPC has decided to switch to VIA.
Like AMD's Geode, the VIA C7-M is x86-compatible, which means the new XO-1 will continue to be compatible with existing software. The new version will also have 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 4GB solid state hard disk with an option for 8GB.
OLPC said that prototype versions of the new XO-1 will be available at the end of August.
