Lenovo recalls faulty ThinkPad batteries
Posted on 14 Aug 2009 at 16:11
Lenovo has announced a recall of ten different batteries for its ThinkPad laptops because they are mistakenly displaying a system error alerting users to "irreparable damage".
The company will replace battery packs for models in the T60, T61, R60, R61, X60 and X61 ranges because of an inherent fault in the Lithium-ion batteries which causes the Think Vantage Message Center to display error messages including: "A battery error has occurred. The battery cannot be charged. Replace the battery."
The laptop maker said that "the issue is not a safety recall and does not pose a safety hazard."
There are only certain battery models affected though and you'll need to check the Battery FRU part number. For the R60, R61, T60 and T61 models, the bad batteries are labelled 42T4546, 42T4566, and 92P1141.
The X60 and X61's faulty battery list reads as follows: 42T4550, 42T4567, 42T4568, 92P1169, 92P1173, 93P5028 and 93P5030.
In order to qualify for a free replacement, you'll need to run Lenovo's ThinkPad Battery Diagnostic Tool to determine if your battery has failed due to this issue. If the Diagnostic Tool recognises your battery needs to be recalled, you'll be directed to a webpage where you can request a replacement.
