Samsung releases super-slim laptops
Posted on 3 Sep 2009 at 11:17
Samsung has launched a series of super-slim laptops, all of which use Intel's increasingly-popular Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors.
The processors are both cheap and power-efficient, enabling manufacturers to make thin (Samsung claims the X series laptops are no thicker than a £1 coin) and light laptops that aren't incredibly expensive.
Of Samsung's new line-up the X120 looks to be the most interesting. This model has an 11.6in screen with a resolution of 1,366x768 (the same as the company's recently announced N510 netbook).
It's hard to tell from the features table (see below), but we're guessing that the X120 will ship with a dual-core Pentium processor (either the 1.2GHz Pentium SU2300 or 1.3GHz Pentium SU2700). The laptop will weigh just 1.36kg. Strangely, while the X420 and X520 are both listed as having six-cell batteries, the X120 is listed as having a smaller four-cell battery, with a "factory option" of a six-cell.
The X520 and X420 models are a little bigger with 15.6in and 14in screens respectively. These are likely to have Core 2 Duo processors, so be a little more powerful than the X120.
The X120 will be available in September (rumours have it priced at around £480), while the X520 and X420 will be out in October. Pricing for the latter models has not yet been released. All three models will ship with Windows Vista Home Premium, but the laptops should qualify for a free Windows 7 upgrade.
