Asus to launch dual-screen eBook reader
Posted on 8 Sep 2009 at 17:11
Asus is planning to shake up the eBook reader market with two of its own eBook readers (dubbed Eee readers, after the company's netbook line): an ultra-cheap model and a dual-screen device that mimics the way we read books now.
The cheap entry-level device will be similar to existing devices, according to The Times, and have a single monochrome screen. However, Asus is planning to make it incredibly cheap: rumours have it costing around £100. This would be impressive, as the cheapest eBook reader at the moment is around £180.
Asus' more exciting product is a dual-screen device, which is hinged like a traditional book. This would allow readers to view two pages at once, as they do with a standard paperback, or view a single page of the book and an alternative source of information, such as a web page.
Asus is promising other big things for the dual-screen Eee Reader. For starters, it claims that it will be full colour and have at least one touchscreen display. Rumours have it that both screens will be touchscreen, allowing the reader to be put into landscape mode, where the lower screen will turn into a keyboard.
No pricing has been announced, but Asus knows that for any device like this to be successful it's going to have to be cheap enough. Expect Asus' Eee Readers to be available before this Christmas.
