Dell launches wireless-power laptops

Dell has launched a new range of laptops that can be charged wirelessly.
The Latitude Z range, which Dell claims are the thinnest and lightest 16in laptops ever made, is packed full of the latest technology.
The stand-out option is the £159 docking stand, which uses inductive technology to power the laptop without cables. The dock also uses wireless I/O, so that peripherals attached to the dock, such as a printer, keyboard and monitor, will connect as soon as the laptop is placed on the stand.
The laptop has a 1,600x900 LED-backlit screen and a large multi-touch trackpad. Inside is no less impressive: a system-on-a-chip inside the Latitude Z, running Linux, runs in "idle mode", checking email and other updates so that whenever you open the laptop there is new information waiting for you. The laptop can stay in idle mode for "days on end", according to Dell.
The Latitude Z also includes numerous security features, including facial recognition for the built-in webcam that locks the computer when the registered user moves away from it (hopefully, this will be better than Lenovo's VeriFace). A built-in 3G broadband card is also offered as an option.
Powered by Intel's new Consumer Ultra Low Voltage (CULV) processors, the Latitude Z promises to have decent battery life. The standard battery is only a 4-cell model, but we've seen amazing battery benchmark results from other CULV-equipped laptops, so we can't wait to get the Latitude Z into our Labs.
