Medion announce first ULV laptop with DVD writer

There's been a lot of laptops released recently based on Intel's new ultra-low voltage (ULV) processors. These power efficient laptops sit between budget nettops and dual-core laptops. They may be lightweight, but to date they have all lacked optical drives, which can be inconvenient, especially if its your only computer.

The Akoya E3211 is the first ULV laptop we've seen with an optical drive, in the is case a DVD writer. This lets you install software from disc without using an external drive, plus you can watch DVDs while on the move.

The still compact laptop measures 32x333x220mm and weighs just 1.7kg. It has a 13.3in HD-capable display with a 1,366x768 resolution. The SU2700 processor runs at just 1.3MHz, but its larger cache and higher FSB make a step up from Atom-class processors. With 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard disk too, you're certainly getting more for your money than with a nettop.

It's currently shipping with Windows Vista Home Premium, but comes with a free upgrade to Windows 7. It's available now from www.medionshop.co.uk for £500 inc VAT. But hold off till we can bring you a full review in the very near future.
