Dell launches new low-cost ultra-portable laptop

Dell's brand new 11z is the company's thinnest and lightest Inspiron ever, but is it just a netbook in disguise?
Weighing 1.4kg, the 11z isn't a featherweight like Sony's new Vaio X but it's a heck of a lot cheaper. Unlike the Vaio X, Dell has no qualms about installing an Intel CULV processor rather than an Atom.
Models will start at £349 including VAT and delivery, and will come with up to 4GB of RAM, a 1,366x768 11.6in display, WiFi, up to 500GB of hard disk space and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. The base model will have 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard disk and Vista Home Basic, but the screen resolution is standard across the range.
With these specifications, the 11z should give most netbooks a run for their money, although apart from the processor, this is effectively no different from a netbook as there's no optical drive. No estimates were given for battery life with the standard unit, but an optional six-cell model is claimed to last seven hours between charges.
As you'd expect these days, there's a choice of colours: Obsidian Black, Alpine White, Flamingo Pink, New Cherry Red, Ice Blue, Jade Green, and Passion Purple. Of course, if you want anything other than black, add £25 to the price.
If you want a free 11z, just head to Carphone Warehouse where you'll get one if you sign up for a 24-month, £35 per month T-Mobile contract.
We're currently trying to pry an 11z out of Dell to bring you a full review, and we'll let you know if the svelte 11z is the bargain it appears to be.
