Asus announces new Ion-based Eee PC 1201N netbook with dual-core CPU
Posted on 20 Nov 2009 at 12:47
Asus will launch a new Eee PC netbook in January, the 1201N, which will come equipped with a dual-core Intel Atom 330 processor, up to 3GB of RAM and an Nvidia Ion chipset, which will enable it to decode Full HD video.
Adobe's upcoming Flash 10.1 software introduces GPU acceleration, which means the Ion chipset will be able to handle 1080p videos streamed from YouTube. The 12.1in, LED-backlit LCD screen only has a 1,366x768 resolution, but you can output the Full HD signal via an HDMI port.
The 1201N will include a 250GB hard disk, but Asus is also bundling 500GB of online storage. It will support 802.11 Draft-N wireless technology as well as Bluetooth 2.1. Asus claims the 6-cell battery will give you up to five hours of usage, but we'll have to wait until we can run our benchmarks to confirm this. A decent netbook should give up to eight hours of battery life, and we're sceptical of Asus's claims: the dual-core processor and Ion chipset, along with a larger screen, are bound to draw more power than the average netbook.
