Apple releases Boot Camp for Windows 7

Apple has finally updated its Boot Camp software to make it compatible with Windows 7, almost three months after Microsoft's latest operating system was released to the public.

Boot Camp 3.1 brings support for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate.

The new version of Boot Camp addresses issues with the Apple trackpad, turns off the red digital audio port LED on laptop computers when it is not being used, and supports the Apple wireless keyboard and Apple magic mouse.

The 32-bit version weighs in at 380.73MB, while the 64-bit version is 274.58MB and requires either Windows XP or Windows Vista SP2 before installing Windows 7. This makes the update less useful, but support for Microsoft's latest OS will of course be welcomed by Boot Camp lovers.

Those of you with the recently released Late 2009 21.5in and 27in iMacs will also need to download additional drivers, while older iMacs and Mac Pros will need the Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 update to ensure compatibility.

Finally, the fruit maker has also released Boot Camp Utility for Windows 7 Upgrade, which you'll need to use to un-mount the read-only Macintosh volume on Windows Vista before upgrading from Vista to Windows 7.
