Apple says iPad owners will have to buy a new device when the battery dies

Apple has confirmed that iPad owners that find it that will no longer hold its charge will have to pay for a replacement unit, as no replacement batteries will be available.

As with other recent Apple devices, the iPad is a completely sealed unit with no access for users, hence no access to the battery and no simple way to replace it. Instead, users will need to post their device back and pay a discounted price - $107 (around £70) - for a replacement unit.

Terms and conditions apply to the swap, and users will need to make sure that they've backed up their existing iPad, as Apple will not transfer files and settings to the replacement model. There's also a requirement that any iPad sent in must be free from damage and must not have any "unauthorized modifications". We assume that this will restrict people that jailbreak their iPad in order to install a wider range of software from getting a new device.

Apple also hasn't confirmed whether replacement iPads will be brand-new units or simply refurbished models that have already been sent in.

To us the situation is ridiculous and the company should provide an easy way for users to replace the battery should it fail on them, or at least provide a walk-in service at Apple stores.
