iPad sales reach three million

Apple's iPad appears to have succeeded in igniting demand in slate PCs where so many others have failed and, if initial sales figures are anything to go by, it's set to be the next big market for manufacturers.
According to figures released by the Cupertino-based company yesterday, the iPad has sold over three million units a mere eighty days after its US launch.
The sales, which represent a pretty impressive 37,500 iPads per day, are a clear indicator that the public wants tablet-style devices, and a sign that Apple has successfully found the perfect product to offer: a cut-down, slimline slate running a custom OS with none of the complications and expectations of a full-blown desktop operating system.
Three million units is even more impressive when you take into account the surprisingly high launch price over here in the UK: while initial interest in the device was just as high as in the US, the initial sheen was quickly worn off when Apple announced it would retail for significantly more in UK stores than in the US - even when VAT is taken into account.
Despite this, the figures don't lie and they show that Apple has a definite winning formula. All that's left is to see what the company's competitors can offer, and whether a competing device could topple the gadget which is already becoming synonymous with the word tablet.
