Apple hit with hot battery recall
Posted on 23 May 2005 at 10:47
Apple has issued a recall notice for approximately 128,000 batteries in iBook and PowerBook models sold from October 2004 to May 2005. The voluntary recall affects batteries manufactured by LG Chem and fitted in 12in iBooks and 12in and 15in PowerBooks.
The recall follows a warning from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, which found that an internal short circuit could cause the batteries to overheat, posing a fire hazard.
Apple will provide a new battery free of charge to all customers whose battery model numbers are A1061, A1078, or A1079 and serial numbers begin with HQ441 through HQ507 and 3X446 through 3X510. To view the model and serial numbers labeled on the bottom of the battery, you must remove the battery from the computer. The number is printed in black or dark grey lettering beneath a barcode.
Full details plus information on how to apply can be found at the iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 Battery Exchange Program page on Apple's website.
This is the second time within a year that Apple has had to recall batteries manufactured by LG Chem. Last August a similar fault was discovered in 28,000 PowerBook batteries.
