Toshiba Satellite A110-274 review

Verdict:

Toshiba's A110-274 is a well-built notebook at a low price. It's a decent buy, but if you can afford it, you should spend a little more on a computer with a dual-core processor

Our Rating 4 stars out of 5

The A110-274 is considerably cheaper than most of the notebooks here, but like Hi-Grade's Ultinote it lacks a dual-core processor.

FEATURES

The front of the chassis has a dedicated volume control and a pair of distinctive speaker grilles. The speakers sound clear and well balanced. The display isn't the brightest here, but is evenly lit and capable of a clean, pure white. It has a resolution of 1,280x800 pixels and renders colours accurately. It's a good display that will suffice for any task.

The keyboard flexes a little when you type on it, and the action of the keys could be firmer. However, keystrokes have lots of depth and provide plenty of feedback. The touch pad is small but accurate, with buttons neatly built into the chassis. There are several handy media short cut buttons to the right of the keyboard. Inside, there's a 60GB hard disk. Many notebooks in the group have 80GB disks, so those with huge music or video collections may want to look elsewhere.

PERFORMANCE

Toshiba has used an Intel Core Solo T1350 processor in this notebook. It isn't a dual-core chip, so it's outperformed in our video-encoding test. However, 1GB of RAM is fitted as standard, so it scored an average 103 points overall in our benchmarks. Those who want to encode video should look for a dual-core model, but the A110-274 is capable of most tasks.

The integrated graphics chip couldn't run our Doom 3 test, so gamers should look at the Evesham or PC Nextday notebooks instead. The battery lasted for an impressive three hours and 13 minutes, which makes it suitable for regular mobile use.
