Orange plans own-brand Android smartphone

Orange is set to follow in Vodafone's footsteps with the launch of an own-brand budget smartphone running Google's increasingly popular Android mobile platform.
Currently codenamed Project JAL or Project PAL depending on which rumour you read, the handset is stated by TechRadar - quoting "a source close to the matter" - to be a slimline, iPhone-style design with no physical keyboard and a three megapixel camera on the rear.
Sadly for those hoping for something a little special, it looks like Orange is aiming its first branded Android handset at the budget end of the market - although claims that the device's 3.5in touch-screen display will be based around ultra-bright OLED technology may offer some consolation, but current shortages of such screens may cause headaches for those looking to get a handset on launch day. WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS are included.
The handset runs Android 2.1, which puts it on a par with most Android smartphones currently on the market - but sadly means that buyers will be lacking the speed enhancements and other improvements which Google brought with the latest Android 2.2 release, unless Orange release an update to the device after it launches.
Orange has refused to comment on the rumours, aside from a vague commitment to unveil "Android models in our own device range in the coming months." As a result, precise launch dates or pricing information is not yet available for the handset.
