Keeping the Legend alive
Posted on 23 Jul 2010 at 06:01
I recently graduated from a series of cheap, basic and virtually indestructible phones to an HTC Legend. As it's my first smartphone, I'm both very precious about it and rather worried that I might accidentally scratch its screen by putting it in the same pocket as my keys, drop it down the toilet while drunk or lose it in a mosh pit. Yes, these really are all fates that my previous phones have suffered. This is why I can't have nice things.
Bearing this in mind, I've decided to do everything I can to keep my Legend safe. Here are the options I've tried so far.
Insure it
Rather than going for an expensive insurance policy from my service provider, I instead just made sure that it was covered by my home contents insurance (which in my case also covers accidental loss and damage).
However you choose to insure your phone, check to see what your excess is. That's the amount that you have to contribute to a claim, while your insurer covers the rest. My excess is £100, which seems reasonable enough given that the phone is worth about £350.
Policies offered by mobile phone service providers usually have an excess of around £50, but remember to read the small print – many won't cover you for accidental loss or damage, as this is classed as negligence and not covered by the policy.
It's also important to remember that if your phone is lost or stolen you'll need to file a report with the police and obtain a reference number from them before you can claim. You should also make sure that you hang on to information about the phone's IMEI number, proof of purchase, etc..
The Legend needs to be naked.

OK, I admit, I carry mine around in an official HTC form fitting plastic condom to save it from the accidental touch of concrete or keys, but when using it for anything other than a few swipes and it's just better to go bareback.
The aluminium feels far more sensual compared to what can only be described as a crass-plastic paperweight with it on.
PS Hahaha sorry for rudeness.

Thanks for the info on the Proporta web-site - I hadn't come across it before, and am impressed with their range of products.
I've just ordered a Proporta screen protector for an HTC Desire. I'll have to see if it's as good as The Invisible Shield, my previous favourite.
