Android 3.0 nearing launch?

Google's latest version of its Android mobile platform - Android
2.2 - might be impressive, but it could be left in the dust by Android 3.0 sooner than anyone expected if reports of leaked development builds are true.
Electronista reports that Google is already at the stage of field testing fully operational builds of the next generation of Android, with the creators of the Linpack benchmark utility claiming to have received data back from client devices running Android versions 3.0, 3.0.1, and even 3.2.
While it's possible to modify a handset to report a false version number to apps such as Linpack, the claims are apparently verified by sightings of a Nexus One handset apparently running "Firmware version 3.0" posted on Phandroid.
Although Google hasn't yet offered an exhaustive list of the new features due to appear in the next platform release, it's thought that - unlike Android 2.2, which concentrated on improving the performance of the platform and adding Flash support - Android 3.0 will include a major overhaul of the user interface and integration into the up-coming Google Music online store.
Sadly, with no official word from Google on whether the reports of Android 3.0 test builds are real or just clever fakery, anyone hoping for a handset running the latest version will have to settle for the - admittedly excellent - Android 2.2 for now.
