Motorola confirms Android update schedule

Motorola has release the worldwide update schedule for its Android-based smartphones, and there's some bad news if you're a Backflip or Dext owner.
According to the company's official support page, updated late last week, the only European Android-based handset due to get an upgrade to the latest version of Google's operating system is the Milestone, with an "initial rollout of upgrade to Android 2.2 planned for Q4 [2010]."
Owners of the Backflip or Dext handsets, however, are left out in the cold: both handsets are listed as "will not have software upgrade to Android 2.1," meaning Android 2.2 is almost certainly out of the question - despite the fact that the US version of the Backflip will be getting an update to Android 2.1 in Q3 this year.
Looking down the upgrade list, this appears to be something of a theme: where newer releases of Android are available in the US already - or at least planned - the European handsets are either ignored completely or have to suffer significant delays.
If Motorola is able to stick to its schedule - something it has had problems doing in the past with the original Android 2.1 update for the Milestone - Milestone owners will get to enjoy the enhancements offered by Android 2.2 by the end of the year, but Dext and Backflip users look set to be left either running outdated software or needing to buy a brand-new handset.
