T-Mobile confirms G2 smartphone

T-Mobile USA has officially unveiled the successor to the original G1 Android smartphone - and you'll be amazed to hear that they're calling it the G2.
Designed to connect to the company's high-speed HSPA+ network, often referred to as a '4G' network, the G2 is an Android-based smartphone featuring a 3.7in touch-screen with a hinged design that allows it to reveal a surprisingly large QWERTY keyboard.
Running the latest version of Android - release 2.2, which features a
raft of improvements over prior versions - the T-Mobile G2 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor running at 800MHz, slower that the 1GHz that was expected of the device but still enough to provide what the company claims will be a "blazing fast" experience.
Despite this, T-Mobile has high hopes for the device: with 720p high-definition recording available through the 5 megapixel camera, the company is clearly looking to make the G2 something of an 'entertainment' handset - and is including an 8GB microSD card, upgradeable to 32GB, to store your content.
Despite its impressive specifications, T-Mobile could well have a fight on its hands: when the original G1 launched, it was the first Android smartphone available. Now, however, Android is rapidly becoming the dominant mobile operating system next to Apple's iOS - meaning significantly more competition for the company this time around.
US customers have been advised that pre-orders will open "starting later this month," although there's no news yet as to UK availability and pricing.
