US company unveils the 'anti iPhone'

American mobile phone manufacturer Hop-On has launched a new no-frills GSM handset, which will be available worldwide for just £5.

The pre-paid HOP1800 is billed as the 'anti iPhone', with the company stating that the phone does just one thing extremely well: make phone calls.

"Though the iPhone is an amazing device, I challenge anyone to make a call faster than with the HOP1800," says Hop-On CEO Peter Michaels. "The HOP1800 is also the perfect iPhone travelling companion. Just buy a local SIM card and you can use the HOP1800 with over 40 domestic wireless carriers," Michaels added.

The manufacturer claims the handset weighs a scant 77 grams, offers 4 hours of talk time, 150 hours of standby time and polyphonic ring tones.

Though low in cost, the HOP1800 uses the Infineon chip to ensure audio quality, reception and call stability don't suffer.

With the £5 retail price, the company acknowledges that customers may consider the HOP1800 as a disposable mobile phone. It therefore offers a £2.50 rebate for those who return the phone, to encourage recycling.
