iPhone a victim of its own success

Hordes of customers queuing up for Apple's new 3G iPhone today were left empty handed due to issues with O2's registration system. The telco claims it is close to selling out of the 16GB on its first day, and is working on getting its hands on more units from Apple.
Queues of up to 150 people waited outside Apple, O2 and Carphone Warehouse stores this morning, eager to get their mitts on the gadget as iPhone fever sweeps the UK. However, problems with O2 registration system meant the company had to rely on its back up system, causing customers to take 20 minutes on average to get themselves registered.
Many iPhone fanatics who were at the retailers' doors at 8am, found that they couldn't get their handset before commencing work. With O2 running low on 16GB models, and Apple currently only committing to provide handsets on a weekly basis, customers might have to wait until late next week to show off their new handset to their friends.
The new iPhone is largely similar to its predecessor, but boasts 3G and GPS capabilities. It is slightly smaller and has a plastic back-panel rather than a metal one, but one of its key advantages - its new software - is available to download on the old version.
