Apple pulls iPhone modem app
Posted on 4 Aug 2008 at 12:07
Apple has removed software from the iTunes App Store that enabled an iPhone to be used as a modem for a laptop.
NetShare disappeared from the store at the end of last week, with, according to the developer Nullriver, no explanation from Apple.
"We're not quite sure why Apple took down the NetShare application yet, we've received no communication from Apple thus far. NetShare did not violate any of the Developer or App Store agreements," the developer said in a blog post, adding that it was hoping to get some feedback from Apple.
That has not materialised, leaving only the suggestion that the software somehow violated Apple's deal with mobile carriers, notably AT&T in the US.
AT&T has said that it will not allow the iPhone to be tethered to a laptop. In all likelihood, it is concerned about the amount of bandwidth that would be sucked up. It would also rather sell you a separate package for mobile access from the laptop.
