iPhone video bug exposed
Posted on 6 Nov 2008 at 13:08
A bug in the iPhone’s video software could cause the device to crash, an Italian software engineer has discovered.
Piergiorgio Zambrini says that the flaw could be exploited if the user tried to play a maliciously crafted video file. The vulnerability also affects video-capable iPods and may also affect Macs and some Linux-based devices that employ the same video technology as Apple.
Zambrini has informed Apple, but promises to publish some details of the flaw next week. However the technical details will be kept to himself and the iPhone’s maker.
The bug does not appear to cause any lasting damage, or compromise the security of data on the device.
Zambrini, who last year released software that enabled iPhones to be used on any mobile network, said that he has applied for the iPhone security engineer job that Apple advertised in July, but has not heard back.
