'Facebook phone' to launch next week
Posted on 6 Nov 2008 at 17:44
A new 'Facebook phone' will be launched by mobile phone operator 3 next week. The INQ1 phone will be specifically tailored to enhance how users interact with social networking website Facebook.
The phone follows previous launches of internet application-themed phones such as the Skypephone and Skypephone S2. A source at 3 intimated that more internet application-themed phones could be on the horizon.
"Obviously this is something we've worked closely with Facebook on, and it is along the lines of 3's thinking on what is being followed through for a lot of products," the source said.
3 is remaining tight-lipped on the phone's capabilities, but it is rumoured to be a slide-phone that will offer users a new way to access Facebook profiles and interact with friends, while using the application with a mobile phone.
It will also offer instant messaging through Facebook Chat, Skype integration and an eBay tracker, according to industry sources.
While 3 is not giving out any details on the phone's price, speculation suggests that it will be available sim-free for around £100.
