Apple strikes new blow in iPhone unlocking saga

Apple may have implemented software in its new MacBook and MacBook Pro models that disables the latest iPhone and iPod touch hacks, according to unconfirmed reports.

The reports on are inconclusive, but indicate that when unlocked iPhones and iPod touches are connected to one of the new Macs, an error message appears to say that the connected device could not be properly identified.

The error does not appear when the devices are connected to an older Mac, suggesting that Apple has implemented code either in the specific build of OS X that is installed on the new Macs or in their unique version of iTunes 8.

Apple has played cat and mouse with hackers seeking to unlock its mobile devices, both to enable the iPhone to run on any mobile network and to enable both devices to run unofficial software.

The recent iTunes 8 release disabled the iPhone Dev Team’s Pwnage hack, but only briefly as a patch for the unlocking software was quickly made available.

But Apple seems to have had another trick up its sleeve. Doubtless the hackers are working on unravelling it.
