Adobe ARMs Flash for mobile devices
Posted on 17 Nov 2008 at 10:32
Adobe has announced that it has begun working with ARM to develop a version of Flash that is optimised ARM processors and the mobile devices that use them, such as the iPhone.
The collaboration will see Adobe optimise Flash Player 10 and its Adobe AIR technology for ARM-powered devices, which include mobile phones, set-top boxes, mobile Internet devices, televisions, automotive platforms and portable media players, will accelerating the mobile graphics and video capabilities of ARM platforms.
“Video created for the Adobe Flash Player is the leading video format on the web today, and this collaboration with ARM is another important step towards bringing the complete web experience to mobile devices worldwide,” said Gary Kovacs, general manager and vice president, Mobile and Devices at Adobe.
That isn’t to say that Flash is coming to the iPhone anytime soon, but this collaboration may help to persuade Apple chief executive Steve Jobs to reconsider the company’s position that Flash is too unwieldy for its mobile devices. It wouldn’t do Adobe’s case any harm if it also spent some time optimising Flash for Macs, which is a poor second to the Windows Vista version.
