Turn your Touch into an iPhone
Posted on 8 Dec 2008 at 16:16
Owners of Apple's iPod Touch can turn their media players into a mobile phone by simply downloading some free software.
According to mobile internet telephone company Truphone, its iPod touch software "effectively turns the iPod touch into a mobile phone" by routing calls over the web via the device's wifi capability.
"Not only is the software free, but calls made using Truphone's application for the iPod touch are also free - just in time to save precious cash when making those Christmas calls to friends and family," Truphone said.
But anyone rushing out to grab an iPod touch to get an iPhone for a fraction of the usual price could be disappointed. Aside from needing to purchase a microphone for the iPod touch device, calls can currently only be made to customers of Truphone's internet telephony service, and to users of the Google Talk instant messaging service.
However, Truphone promised that new features for iPod touch owners who have downloaded its software are "coming soon". These include the ability to make and receiving calls to and from landlines, Instant messaging to Skype and MSN, the facility to call Skype and MSN users and check and set facilities for Facebook and Twitter.
Truphone for iPod touch can be downloaded from Apple's App Store.
