Hackers unlock iPhone 3G

The iPhone Dev Team has announced that it has completed its efforts to unlock the 3G iPhone and plans to release the software on 31 December.

The hack will only work on phones that have the 2.11.07 baseband firmware, but full details of the unlocking process will not be available until the software is released.

Once unlocked, an iPhone can be used with any network provider, but there may be considerable drawbacks. The hack will doubtless be subject to detailed analysis by Apple’s developers, who have long played a cat and mouse game with iPhone unlockers in order to protect the interests of mobile carriers who have taken exclusive rights to the phone.

Just last month, for example, the iTunes 8 update temporarily disabled the iPhone Dev Team’s Pwnage hack, with users of unlocked phones unable to sync their devices. But that was less of an inconvenience that the outcome of a previous Apple anti-unlocking effort that rendered phones unusable.
