3 cancels cheap roaming

While Vodafone has announced that it will charge UK rates for mobile users abroad, 3 has just done the opposite and announced that it is dropping its similar 3 Like Home service from June 30.

The service allowed 3 customers to make calls, send texts and even access data at UK rates when roaming on a 3 sister network in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy and Sweden.

3 has said that it's dropping the service in order to offer more competitive prices elsewhere.

"By removing 3 Like Home we'll be able to offer more competitive prices in non-3 sister network countries," the company said in a statement. "Secondly, we know that many of our customers roamed onto another network by mistake while in a 3 Like Home country and built up a bigger bill than expected."

After June 30 all 3 customers will be charged at standard roaming rates. This will cause a huge increase in call costs for people visiting Australia as calls will rise to £1.40 a minute to make a call and 90p a minute to receive a call. visitors to European countries won't be as badly affected: calls from Austria will cost 34p per minute and calls received 15p per minute.
